Suddenly, my son notices a deer in the back yard. Like the Divine One, I cannot make this being here, nor can I control the probability of presence and existence. I am a creature. But God gives to creatures like me. I say to myself, "Cor meum vigilat." As I wait, I become a candidate to encounter the gentle givenness of God. More satisfying is God's presence than any mortal fabrication.
Howard Thurman, in Disciplines of the Spirit, introduces the idea that a person becomes a “candidate” to encounter God through intentional spiritual engagement.
